As we approach the holidays, I wanted to highlight some of the amazing work our chapters have been doing with student activities. Many chapters have been having events or have plans for events coming soon. If you haven’t been involved with your chapter’s student activities, I encourage you to look out for any updates from your Student Activities chairs and get involved!

This year for student activities has been going great! Back in October the Arizona State University branch took a tour of their ice storage facility on campus (still being built). It was awesome to see all the equipment! We also had a joint networking event with YEA and Student Activities at the beginning of November. We had a great turnout, and it was a good chance for students to talk to industry professionals.

Students from Golden Valley Charter Schools for Education Renewal - River School had the chance to step into the shoes of real brewers and engineers — learning how yeast turns sugar into CO₂ and ethanol, counting yeast cells under a microscope, and discovering how science makes their favorite breads and root beers possible.
Our goal? To spark curiosity and show that STEM (and even brewing!) is full of creativity, chemistry, and cool experiments. Seeing their faces light up as they watched “yeast eat sugar” was the best part of the day.

In October, Golden Gate and San Jose chapters had a booth at the Bay Area Science Festival. We ran an air pressure experiment where the kids blew up a ziplock bag and pushed the air out to observe how different objects take different amounts of force to move. The day went really well and both the kids and volunteers had fun!

In October, members of the Golden Gate chapter visited a 4th grade classroom to teach about electromagnetic motors. The kids had fun putting together the motors with the help of the volunteers and all the motors spun!

In November, the UC Berkeley Student Branch organized a tour and presentation of the David Brower Center, a building on campus. It was a fundraiser to support their students traveling to the Winter Conference.

Great job to all the chapters for the amazing work so far and looking forward to more to come. A special shout out to Sacramento Valley for already making PAR for PAOE!
