Nominating Committee
Our Mission Statement:
Our goal as the Region X nominating team is to select the most qualified ASHRAE members for various positions in accordance with ASHRAE guidelines. Our DRC, Jack Zarour, encourages all Chapters to provide nominations for various ASHRAE awards.
ASHRAE Awards:
ASHRAE awards such as the ASHRAE Chapter Service Awards requirements are as follows;
The Chapter Service Award should be attainable with consistent involvement by a dedicated and committed chapter member.
- There is no limit to the number of awards made by each region.
- There is no limit to the number of times that an individual can be nominated for the award, but receiving the award shall be limited to one time per recipient.
- The purpose of this award is to recognize the activities and contributions of members of ASHRAE at the chapter level.
- The form of the award is a certificate setting forth the achievements for which the awards are to be made.
- The nominations of a candidate shall be made by the delegate from the candidate's chapter to the Chapters Regional Conference. The final selection shall be made by majority vote of the Chapters Regional Conference delegates in Executive Session at the CRC.
- Qualifications of a candidate shall be a minimum of the credit points from the list of activities. The qualifications must be submitted in writing to the Chapters Regional Committee and include a biographical record of the services rendered and the year of accomplishment.
- Final selection does not require the approval of either the Honors and Awards Committee nor the Board of Directors.
- Presentation of the award shall be made by the Regional Chair at the Chapters Regional Conference, (or at a suitable location) following the candidate's nomination and election. The DRC or another member of the Region ExCom may also make the presentation during a chapter visit.
- Candidates should be reviewed by the Regional Chair and the Regional Nominating Committee Member for accuracy of the data submitted prior to submitting to Society. The Regional Chair and Chapter President shall sign the certificate.
A complete list of various ASHRAE awards is presented under appendix N of the "Manual for Chapter Operations" at ASHRAE website at www.ashrae.org.
How Leaders Are Selected
I'll bet you never stopped to read the ASHRAE Bylaws, Article VII Section 7.7. Well, neither had I until I served on the Society's Nominating Committee.
Presidential Members Terry Townsend and Kent Peterson serve as the chair and vice chair of the committee, which brings forward a list of candidates for open Board of Director positions that will be voted on during the Society's spring election.
"The office shall seek the person, rather than the person seek the office," is the opening line of the policy statement of the "Election and Appointment Procedures" for ASHRAE. This means the Nominating Committee must determine from all of the available recommendations which candidate is best to serve in each position to better ASHRAE and to best serve ASHRAE's members. Nominating Committee members take this task very seriously.
There are three things you can do:
- Update your ASHRAE bio. This allows those charged with reviewing candidates to see the chapter positions that you have held, the technical committees on which you have served, and papers you have written, where you might be licensed, etc. It only takes a few minutes to create, edit and update your bio on www.ashrae.org. Visit "biographical record system" via the shortcuts link. By the way, it makes a great resume too.
- Promote your local members. Have them brought forward at the chapter's regional conference (CRC). At our region's CRC, the regional Nominating Committee meets in executive session to identify members to fill regional officer positions, including regional vice chairs, director and regional chair, directors-at-large, and other positions. Chapter's delegates and alternates take recommendations to the executive session at the CRC. Each CRC Nominating Committee sends to ASHRAE headquarters a list of candidates it thinks will best serve the Society. These names are brought forward at the fall Nominating Committee meeting (this year Nov 1). You may send an e-mail to Gloria Cofer, assistant to the Board of Directors, at gcofer@ashrae.org at if you have candidates for whom you want to send supporting letters or recommend for officers or directors, or committee chair and vice-chair positions.
- Participate enthusiastically where your interests lie! The success of ASHRAE depends on members sharing ideas and creativity to promote the arts and sciences of HVAC&R. Your fellow ASHRAE members may recommend you to be one of our leaders. We need you!
Upcoming CRC in Long Beach, California:
Contact your Chapter's Delegate and Alternate if you know of a potential candidate that could serve ASHRAE beyond Chapter service. These potential candidates make these decisions to learn more about our industry, methods and means to solve the problems encountered with the HVAC &R systems. Great things happen to these individual i.e. Kent Peterson, P.E., Past President of ASHRAE, (from Orange Empire Chapter).
